Many communities in rural Rwanda have no access to basic life-saving health services. Often the communities that lack those services are the poorest ones and need those services the most. Kilimanjaro Women Information Exchange and Consultancy Organization (KWIECO) was founded in 1987 in Moshi, Tanzania. It provides advice on legal, health, social and economic issues to women. The fundamental principle on which KWIECO policies are founded is the promotion of human rights, economic justice, and gender equality by ensuring equal access to justice and equality for women and children.
Bathandwa started informally in the family home of a couple living in Makhaya, Khayelitsha, while they were raising their own three children. Their home grew into a place of safety that cares for abandoned, HIV+, and physically and mentally disabled children of all ages. Eventually, 36 children were living in the original private home. A private fundraising and networking group identified their need for support and started by supplying food, clothing and furniture, and organising regular outings and mentoring.
